What is Psoriasis and is there a psoriasis treatment?

Cream containing placenta extract is a great psoriasis treatment

But first

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a common chronic skin disease that appears in a variety of forms. The most common form of the disease is characterised by a build up of rough, dead skin cells that form thick scales on the skin.

Affecting approximately 125 million people worldwide (that's around 3% of the world's population!) there is no cure for the disease but there are a variety of psoriasis treatments which can alleviate the symptoms.

Psoriasis treatment commonly focusses on suppressing the growth of skin cells as a psoriatic skin cell matures in only 3-4 days.

A normal skin cell takes 30 days to mature and falls off naturally, whereas psoriatic skin cells build up rapidly and form lesions instead of being shed.

What are the different forms of the disease?

The most common form of psoriasis is called PLAQUE psoriasis accounting for 80% of all cases. Typically found on the scalp, knees, lower back and elbows, it produces red inflamed lesions on the skin.

PUSTULAR psoriasis, as the name suggests, manifests itself as blisters of pus surrounded by red skin. Due to it's unsightly appearance, many people believe that the skin is infected but the pus consists merely of white blood cells and is neither infectious nor contagious.

GUTTATE psoriais looks like small red individual spots on the arms and legs. "Guttate" means "drop" in latin and some of the spots can be very tiny making treatment, for example with creams, more tedious.

INVERSE psoriasis is found in skin folds and under armpits, the groin and under the breasts. It usually lacks the white scale associated with the common form of PLAQUE psoriasis but is irritated by rubbing and sweating.

A more inflammatory form of the disease is called ERYTHRODERMIC psoriasis commonly affecting the entire body and charaterised by fiery reddening of the skin accompanied by severe itching and pain. A doctor should be sought immediately as the disease can cause protein and fluid loss leading to other complications.

What psoriasis treatment is available to alleviate the symptoms?

1 Topical treatments in the form of creams and liquids - usually the first form of defence.

2 Phototherapy using ultraviolet light.

3 Prescription medication for more severe cases of psoriasis.

4 Alternative approaches including changes to diet and lifestyle and treatments such as acupuncture can be considered.

Because of the variety of forms and differing severity of the disease, the same treatment will not work for everyone. The best advice is to work closely with your doctor to find the best treatment and to remain open-minded to alternative forms of psoriasis treatment as new forms of psoriasis treatment are constantly being sought. There is even hope that a cure might be found as scientists understand more about the genetic links behind the disease.

Is there a new treatment I should try?

Creams are the most common treatment for psoriasis and there is no shortage of creams on the market.
