What is Vitiligo and is there a Vitiligo treatment?

Placenta extract cream is a great vitiligo treatment.

But first

What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a relatively common skin disorder affecting at least one in every hundred people throughout the world. White spots or patches appear on the skin caused by destruction of the pigment cells in those areas, resulting in the pigment being destroyed or no longer produced.

What causes vitiligo?

There are many different theories about what causes vitiligo.

One of the most popular beliefs is that it is a type of autoimmune disorder, where the body's immune system attacks melanocytes which are the cells that produce melanin and therefore skin colour.

Many doctors believe that the basis for this autoimmune disorder is genetic. Certainly, if you have close relatives with vitilgo, there is a much higher chance of you getting it yourself.

What does autoimmune mean?

Antibodies are created when our immune system fights a disease. Sometimes immune systems over-react and make antibodies to their own tissue, which can cause disorders - that is what is meant by the term "autoimmune". The tendency for this over-reaction seems to run genetically in families.

Is vitiligo infectious?

Absolutely not. You cannot catch vitiligo.

It affects both sexes and all races and tends to develop when a person is in their twenties.

Famous people with vitiligo include Graham Norton, famous TV presenter/comedian who was diagnosed with vitilgo in 1988. And of course Michael Jackson who was diagnosed with the condition in 1984.

Does vitiligo make you feel ill?

No, but the psychological trauma of having the disorder can cause depression among some people. In certain cultures, the stigma that vitiligo attracts can often mean a person is seen as evil or diseased and he/she is shunned by the local community. This can lead to severe stress and lack of self esteem.

Should I stay out of the sunlight if I have vitiligo?

As the patches of white skin have no melanin in them, prolonged exposure to the sun can cause severe sunburn, but sunlight itself encourages the production of melanin so it is not advisable to stay out of the sun completely. Just be sensible and wear a wide brimmed hat and appropriate clothing.

What is a good vitiligo treatment?

There is still a lot of research being done but treatments currently available focus on slowing down the progress of vitiligo to stop it spreading rather than on curing it.

These include:

* Steroid creams

* Medication combined with Ultra violet irradiation

* Laser treatment

* Surgery (skin grafts)

* Subcutaneous injections

Vitiligo Support International website.

Cosmetics and vitiligo

Many vitiligo sufferers turn to cosmetics to camouflage their condition. This can often have a far more positive impact than preventative forms of vitiligo treatment.

Depending on the extent of the condition, it can also can be very effective and in some countries, much help is available.

Red Cross help

In the UK, for example, the Red Cross run the free Skin Camouflage Service which is available to people by referral through their GP or dermatologist.

Is there anything else that might help?

Our

acupuncture specialist's

daughter has had vitiligo for ten years. Whilst treating a patient with acupuncture, she was given a recommendation to try using products containing placenta extract.

Whilst the thought of using a product containing placenta cells may sound a little sinister, rest assured that the cells are taken from volunteers AFTER they have given birth to healthy babies!

She found the product, tried it as a vitiligo treatment on her daughter and was amazed to find that her vitiligo disappeared after only a few weeks of treatment.

You can find out more about placenta extract products in this website or you can check the product out for yourself. It also has great anti aging properties. For skin problems like Vitiligo, try the "Curative Cream". by clicking on the image below
